Functional Capacity Evaluation

The first step in providing rehabilitation therapy is to assess your injury and physical capability. We do this through a variety of assessment tests and measures. By proper evaluation, we can correctly manage your injury and create the best path of care for you.

Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE) are tools that measure a client’s present physical tolerance. They include measurements of lifting, carrying, pushing, sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, squatting and bending. This type of evaluation has become increasingly recognized as an essential assessment tool for determining the safe functional capabilities of injured individuals.

Alongside traditional musculoskeletal examinations, FCEs provide a clearer understanding of the client’s current abilities, in the presence of injury. They are also extremely valuable when applied to Post-Offer Pre-Employment screening to ensure that employees are placed in positions that will not increase their chances of suffering physical injury.

There are several different FCEs offered throughout the Eastern Rehabilitation network intended to address recent, acute and sub acute injuries. We also offer a number of internationally accepted assessments designed to measure the functional status of clients who have suffered long-standing injuries, other physical impairments and disabilities. Our affiliated centres offer the following brand name assessments for long-standing conditions:

  • Key Method Functional Capacity Evaluation
  • Isernhagen Functional Capacity Evaluation
  • Matheson Functional Capacity Evaluation
  • Hanoun Functional Assessment System
  • CBI Functional Evaluation

The inclusion of FCEs is now accepted as a standard approach to assessment by all of our stakeholder groups and has contributed to the promotion of early, safe return to activity for our patients.
